Oh my! This was such a good book. I did not want to put it down. Such a heart wrenching story. I was going to give it 5 stars, but the book ended so abruptly. In two paragraphs it just ended. It was like the author was told to write so many pages and she got to that page and just had to finish. I was so puzzled as to why Ms Costeloe finished it like she did. I even looked around to see if it all downloaded onto my kindle. From reviews of her other books, she has ended them very abruptly. I wanted to read more of her books, because I really like her writing. But, I don't like to be frustrated with endings like that. So sad, I really liked the book.

The Runaway Family edition by Diney Costeloe Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

I have to agree with most of the reviews given. The ending was very disapointing and extremely under developed. The idea itself of having Laura end the book with a journal entry is nice but there was so much plot left to tell and an abrupt ending did not do this novel justice.

It would have aided the novel to develop the character of Peter; to tell how Helga died and how the boys faired on the Kindertransport. If you are to allude to yhe family being all happily reunited why not explore the details of that with the reader. Instead we have this cliffhanger of an ending - the Nazis could have stopped the boys and their mother for all we know.

Very disapointed.
Taking a little bit of a different turn than most Holocaust stories, this one takes place in the late 30s. Set in Nazi Germany, Runaway Family follows the troubled life of a Jewish family trying to survive after being displaced. The father is arrested during a Hitler Jugend rampage, leaving his family adrift. Struggling to survive, Ruth and her four children live in a very troubled harsh world. Cold, hungry, and homeless, the family treks from place to place trying to find refuge from the virulent antiSemitism plaguing their every step. As the noose tightens for Jews in Germany, the family finds themselves betrayed and trapped. Fleeing to Austria, the family finds a respite but the Germans are not far behind. Living in a nightmarish reality that never ebbs, Ruth learns how to find inner strength and courage to take care of her family.
Using the ghettoization of the Jews within Germany and Austria, this story sheds light on the day to day effort to survive. The horrors of the camps which often serve as the setting for Holocaust novels prove a very heart rendering narrative. But trying to survive the nightmare years before then was a daunting task and broke the spirit of many. Costeloe does a good job of weaving a realistic narrative of the day to day effort of ordinary people and their struggles to find basic staples of daily life. As money, jobs, and freedoms ebb away, Jews lived in the shadows of their former lives. Neighbors turn on their once Jewish friends; family members disappear; and strangers unleash their virulent hatred on the most innocent. Costeloe sheds a very harsh light on this part of the Holocaust that often is overlooked.
Ruth and her four children provide worthy protagonists to provide the novel with a tender overtone. One daughter even begins to lose touch with reality as the cruelties mount. But with a touch of clever plotting, Ruth and her brood endure. Easy to read, well written, Runaway Family offers the reader a good steady read.
I really enjoyed this book. The story of a Jewish mother, Ruth, whose husband has been arrested by the Gestapo, and whose home has been burned out by the same, is riveting. She has 4 children to care for and must use all her courage and resourcefulness to keep them safe, fed, and sheltered. Ruth is a great character and the reader cannot help but like her and root for her to succeed. The family's journey to outrun the Nazis takes many twists and turns and makes for a fascinating story. My only issue for not giving this book 5 stars was the very abrupt ending. I noticed the same kind of ending in a previous book of Ms. Costeloe's - "The Girl with No Name." That was also a great book, but also had a very abrupt ending. It's as if the author got tired of writing the stories and just decided to end it. A more detailed epilogue as to what happened to the various characters would have been appreciated, at least by me.
Another excellent story by Diney Costeloe about a young Jewish family torn about during the Holocaust and the hardships and struggles they endured. I have to agree with the other reviewers about the abrupt ending. It left too many loose ends, which is totally unnecessary in a novel. But aside from my disappointment with that, the story was excellent. I have read most of Ms. Costeloe's books and they've all been great!
This book is a puzzle totally intriguing and engrossing until the very end at which point it absolutely falls apart. I don't think I have ever read such a disappointing ending. Why did you do that Ms Costeloe, did you become bored with your novel? It needs two more chapters at least one showing how the 4 year old twins got to England unaccompanied on the kindertransport and one showing how Ruth got out. And Helga deserved more than a sentence merely telling the reader she died. How? When? Who took care of the twins afterward? How did Edith arrange things afterward? The detail in the rest of the book was precise and convincing and then you simply let your novel fall apart. I would have developed the German character Peter as a vehicle for helping the twins and Ruth get out. But-you needed something! I gave the book three stars but would have given it five if you had written an ending with the same energy and detail as the rest of the book.
I do not understand why this author stops her books mid-story with no ending. I loved this story and was convinced it was going to be one of my new favorites until it just stopped. No resolution. No ending. Just stopped.
I doubled check my ebook, yep that's the end.
The Sister of St. Croix was the same way. Only at least she tacked on a future moment. But it felt too tacked on.
I was prepared to give this 5 stars until I realized the book isn't finished.
